In recognition of National Intern Day, we’re taking a closer look at the experience of summer fellow Jackson Smith and his work as a member of FP1’s political team.
Since joining FP1 at the beginning of the summer, Jackson has become a reliable member of our ad quality assurance team, meticulously reviewing spots before they reach the public. He has also assisted with research, assembled clip packages, monitored social media and supported general consulting projects.
Through FP1’s fellowship program, Jackson also gained broader exposure to political advertising and campaign strategy by participating in FP1 Labs, our artificial intelligence initiative, and the firm’s annual fellowship RFP competition.

Jackson exemplified that this summer, and his hard work earned him the opportunity to stay with FP1 through Election Day, supporting our team during the busiest stretch of the cycle.”

What year are you at USC, and what is your major?
I am a rising junior at USC, majoring in political science and economics.
What first interested you in pursuing a career in politics?
I always loved learning about political history as a kid. When the 2016 election came around, I became hooked on the competitive nature of politics and campaigns.
What was your favorite memory from your summer at FP1?
My favorite part was getting to know my coworkers and RFP team members, especially while discussing college football and arguing that the Big Ten is better than the SEC, which it is.
What is your favorite FP1 ad?
“Show Dog” for John Cornyn. The ad was hilarious, and the AI production was really well done. Making it even better was the office’s plush replica of the dog featured in the advertisement.
What is your favorite thing about living in Southern California?
Definitely the weather. I never have to worry about the cold and can wear a T-shirt pretty much every day. USC football is pretty fun, too. Fight On!
If you could have dinner with one historical figure, who would it be and why?
Winston Churchill. Not only would I leave the meal extremely well fed, but I would also learn so much from his wisdom and experience. He played a pivotal role in defending the free world from authoritarianism, so who wouldn’t want to talk with him for hours?
What were your thoughts on the use of AI in politics before joining FP1? Have they changed?
Before working at FP1, I did not expect to see AI incorporated into politics nearly as much as it is. I have loved seeing how FP1 uses AI in incredibly creative ways.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
After college, I definitely want to work in politics in the Washington, D.C. area. I am not yet sure whether that will mean consulting and advertising, working on Capitol Hill or joining campaigns, but I have loved being exposed to the political industry at FP1 this summer and hope to continue building a career in the field.
